CBD: A Hope For Huntington’s Disease?

By on September 3rd, 2018 in Company Info

“Researchers from the Ramon y Cajal University Hospital’s Foundation for Biomedical Investigation in Madrid have recently completed the first ever clinical trial to investigate a cannabis extract as a treatment for Huntington’s Disease.”1

Huntington’s disease (HD) is a fatal genetic disorder that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. It deteriorates a person’s physical and mental abilities during their prime working years and has no cure. HD is known as the quintessential family disease because every child of a parent with HD has a 50/50 chance of carrying the faulty gene. Today, there are approximately 30,000 symptomatic Americans and more than 200,000 at-risk of inheriting the disease. Every child of a parent with HD has a 50/50 chance of inheriting the expanded gene that causes the disease. If the child has not inherited this expanded gene, he or she will never develop the disease and cannot pass it on to their children. 2

Symptoms Include:

      • Personality changes, mood swings & depression
      • Forgetfulness & impaired judgment
      • Unsteady gait & involuntary movements (chorea)
      • Slurred speech, difficulty in swallowing & significant weight loss

At the moment, there is no evidence to show that cannabinoids work in Huntington’s disease, for symptoms or slowing down progression. There are further scientific studies being performed to collect additional data on the topic.

However, there are many ways that CBD products have been used as a way to assist in calming the symptoms of the disease and improving one’s quality of life during the progression. The use of CBD products can help HD patients steer away from pharmaceuticals with many unhealthy side-effects, such as severe depression or other psychiatric conditions, drowsiness, nausea, restlessness, muscle rigidity, leg swelling, and skin discoloration. Such medications also have a high risk for dependency or abuse. 3

How CBD Products May Improve Huntington’s Disease Symptoms: 4

  • Pain relief – CBD is commonly used to relieve pain and can help HD patients with physical ailments such as soreness. Studies have shown that CBD may help reduce chronic pain by impacting endocannabinoid receptor activity, reducing inflammation and interacting with neurotransmitters. According to the Institute of Medicine of The National Academies, 100 million Americans live with chronic pain. Along with drastically reducing quality of life, chronic pain can increase healthcare costs and have a negative impact on productivity at work. 5
  • Reduces anxiety– Research has found that using CBD (which is an all-natural substance) for anxiety is an extremely effective way to alleviate anxiety symptoms without the harsh symptoms of prescribed medication. 6
  • Assists in dealing with depression – CBD improves mood while relieving depression symptoms. It sends the brain more serotonin, while boosting your mood. “a questionnaire on depressive symptoms in a survey of nearly 4500 people revealed fewer depressive symptoms in cannabis users than in non-users. Case reports of five people suffering from depression revealed that depression preceded cannabis use and that the effects of cannabis had some anti-depressant effects. In addition, cannabis use is associated with elevated mood and decreased depression in patients with chronic diseases,” (An excerpt from Cannabinoids and the Brain by Linda A. Parker) 7
  • May help with muscle spasms – In one study, 47 participants reported experiencing a significant improvement in pain walking and muscle spasms, compared to the placebo group. CBD has also been researched for its potential effectiveness in assisting in relieving symptoms in several other neurological diseases. 8
  • Improved sleep quality– Cannabinoids are filled with hundreds of different compounds, several of which have been studied for decades for their therapeutic benefits for sleep. The cannabis compound that is capturing a large amount of interest as it relates to sleep disorders is CBD. This compound has calming, anti-anxiety, and anti-psychotic effects and is helping users gain back their needed shut-eye. 9

Our Products

Our full-spectrum hemp extract oil is made from organic industrial hemp which contains only legal trace amounts of THC (less than O.3%). These amounts are so small there is no psychoactive effect. We also offer THC-Free Isolate CBD Oil for an alternative option.

Our products are 3rd party laboratory tested multiple times from time of harvest to shipping.  All of our products are produced from 100% non-GMO Domestic Hemp, grown to organic standards and have been tested for contaminants such as pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals and mold.  Our industry leading 3rd party testing procedure is performed on every final product batch and is critical to confirm accuracy in potency information and to check for residual solvents, terpenes and cannabinoid content.
