CBD as a Potential Aid for Neurodegenerative Disease

By on October 25th, 2018 in Company Info

Neurodegenerative disease is an umbrella term for a range of conditions which primarily affect the neurons in the human brain. Neurodegenerative disorders are a major health burden both in the United States and worldwide. The most recent estimates show that the neurological disorders included in the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study1 – Alzheimer’s and other dementias, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, and headache disorders (migraine, tension-type headache [TTH], and medication-overuse headache [MOH])–represent 3 percent of the worldwide burden of disease. Although this is a seemingly small overall percentage, dementia, epilepsy, migraine, and stroke rank in the top 50 causes of disability-adjusted life years. 2

Degenerative nerve diseases affect many of your body’s activities, such as balance, movement, talking, breathing, and heart function. Many of these diseases are genetic. Sometimes the cause is a medical condition such as alcoholism, a tumor, or a stroke. Other causes may include toxins, chemicals, and viruses. Sometimes the cause is not known.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of more than 100 chemical compounds derived from cannabis, a plant also known as marijuana.

Common Symptoms of Neurodegenerative Diseases

  • memory loss
  • forgetfulness
  • apathy
  • anxiety
  • agitation
  • a loss of inhibition
  • mood changes

Neurodegenerative diseases cause permanent damage, so symptoms tend to get worse as the disease progresses. New symptoms are also likely to develop over time.

There’s no cure for neurodegenerative diseases, but symptom management can still help. Management for these diseases includes trying to reduce symptoms and maintain quality of life, often involving the use of medications to control symptoms. However, more and more patients are leaning towards all-natural remedies to assist in symptom management, leaving behind the negative side effects of pharmaceuticals.

A 2009 study found that CBD can be used for relieving neuropathic pain. And in two studies, CBD was used to treat inflammatory and neuropathic pain from nerve injury. Researchers found CBD to be an effective alternative treatment because it significantly reduced pain symptoms. 3

A new paper, published in Brain Research Bulletin, shows that CBD can protect against the effects of iron accumulation in the brains of rats. This research sheds light on the potential use of CBD as a way to treat the symptoms associated with neurodegeneration. 4

“The results of this paper point to a potential mechanism by which CBD can ameliorate the effects of neurodegenerative diseases. The authors suggest that iron accumulations, which happen as a result of the onset of disease, cause an accumulation of deletions in the DNA of neuronal MTs, which in turn affects their ability to function, leading to cell death. CBD is able to restore expression of some genes required for MT iron metabolism and restore metabolic functions. How it is able to perform this function is still an open question.” 5

Regardless, this new data points to CBD as a potential therapy for neurodegenerative diseases. While it won’t cure or reverse cognitive decline, it may slow the process and offer a better quality of life for those struggling with these conditions.

Is CBD the same as marijuana? Will it get me high?

In short, CBD is not the same as marijuana. CBD is one of many chemicals found in some strains of the marijuana plant. However, CBD is responsible for many of medical marijuana’s health benefits. More concentrated forms of CBD, such as cannabidiol oil, could offer greater benefits with fewer risks than using medical marijuana. The compound in marijuana that gets users high is called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). No evidence suggests that CBD can get a person high. 6

Our Products

Our full-spectrum hemp extract oil is made from organic industrial hemp which contains only legal trace amounts of THC (less than O.3%). These amounts are so small there is no psychoactive effect. We also offer THC-Free Isolate CBD Oil for an alternative option.

Our products are 3rd party laboratory tested multiple times from time of harvest to shipping.  All of our products are produced from 100% non-GMO Domestic Hemp, grown to organic standards and have been tested for contaminants such as pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals and mold.  Our industry leading 3rd party testing procedure is performed on every final product batch and is critical to confirm accuracy in potency information and to check for residual solvents, terpenes and cannabinoid content. Our Certificates of Analysis are available on our website.

Instead of employing harsh solvents for extraction, we utilize the super critical CO2 method when extracting our hemp oil. CO2 is a much healthier choice than other potential solvents and is “generally regarded as safe” (GRAS) by the FDA.

If you decide to use CBD products for pain management, be sure to consult with a doctor first to help avoid harmful interactions with your current medications and treatments, along with negative side effects.
