CBD for Fibromyalgia

By on March 21st, 2019 in Company Info

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of more than 100 chemical compounds derived from cannabis, a plant also known as marijuana. A small body of research suggests that cannabidiol may help people with fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia1 is a chronic pain condition that causes musculoskeletal pain in addition to fatigue and cognitive issues. There’s no cure for this condition. Treatment options focus on pain management.

What causes fibromyalgia?

The causes of fibromyalgia are not known. Researchers think a number of factors might be involved. Fibromyalgia can occur on its own, but has also been linked to:

  • Having a family history of fibromyalgia
  • Being exposed to stressful or traumatic events, such as: car accidents, injuries to the body caused by performing the same action over and over again (called “repetitive” injuries), or being diagnosed with infections or illnesses.

Common Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

  • Cognitive and memory problems (sometimes called “fibro fog”)
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Morning stiffness
  • Headaches
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Painful menstrual periods
  • Numbness or tingling of hands and feet
  • Restless legs syndrome
  • Temperature sensitivity
  • Sensitivity to loud noises or bright lights

The use of CBD products can help Fibromyalgia patients steer away from pharmaceuticals with many unhealthy and unnecessary side-effects.

The Two Most Common Complaints from Fibromyalgia Patients – How CBD May Help

  • Chronic Pain – According to clinical studies2, CBD has been recently used for chronic pain management such as back pain and arthritis dating back to 2900 B.C. in ancient Chinese medicine. “As states and countries implement medical and recreational cannabis policies, increasing numbers of people are using cannabis pharmacotherapy for pain.” 3 The pain-relieving effects of CBD may be explained by the ways that this substance affects the brain. It may interrupt the nerve pathways that send signals of pain between the brain and the body. There is also an anti-inflammatory action of CBD that would reduce heat and swelling around injury or disease. This, in turn. would reduce pain.
  • Sleeplessness – Cannabinoids are filled with hundreds of different compounds, several of which have been studied for decades for their therapeutic benefits for sleep. The cannabis compound that is capturing a large amount of interest as it relates to sleep disorders is CBD. 4 This compound has calming, anti-anxiety, and anti-psychotic effects and is helping users gain back their needed shut-eye.

A 2009 study found that CBD can be used for relieving neuropathic pain. And in two studies, CBD was used to treat inflammatory and neuropathic pain from nerve injury. Researchers found CBD to be an effective alternative treatment because it significantly reduced pain symptoms. 5

CBD has been studied for conditions and symptoms which often occur in fibromyalgia including nerve pain, joint pain, anxiety, depression, and insomnia.

“I have found CBD acts as a strong muscle relaxant and that gives some mild pain relief. When used topically in combination with other herbs such as arnica, I find it helps joint and muscle pain. Some of my patients report it gives them significant pain relief,” (Ginevra Liptan, MD, Founder and medical director of The Frida Center for Fibromyalgia). 6

In a 2018 study, researchers worked with Fibromyalgia patients and published a scientific report titled, Medical Cannabis for the Treatment of Fibromyalgia. 7

Data was obtained from the registries of two hospitals in Israel (Laniado Hospital and Nazareth Hospital) on patients with a diagnosis of fibromyalgia who were treated with MC. After obtaining patient consent, demographic, clinical, and laboratory parameters were documented. All the patients also completed the Revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire regarding the period before and after MC treatment.

Their conclusions: Medical cannabis had a significant favorable effect on patients with fibromyalgia, with few adverse effects. 8

Is CBD the same as marijuana? Will it get me high?

In short, CBD is not the same as marijuana. CBD is one of many chemicals found in some strains of the marijuana plant. However, CBD is responsible for many of medical marijuana’s health benefits. More concentrated forms of CBD, such as cannabidiol oil, could offer greater benefits with fewer risks than using medical marijuana. The compound in marijuana that gets users high is called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). No evidence suggests that CBD can get a person high.

Our Products

Our full-spectrum hemp extract oil is made from organic industrial hemp which contains only legal trace amounts of THC (less than O.3%). These amounts are so small there is no psychoactive effect. We also offer THC-Free Isolate CBD Oil for an alternative option.

Our products are 3rd party laboratory tested multiple times from time of harvest to shipping.  All of our products are produced from 100% non-GMO Domestic Hemp, grown to organic standards and have been tested for contaminants such as pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals and mold.  Our industry leading 3rd party testing procedure is performed on every final product batch and is critical to confirm accuracy in potency information and to check for residual solvents, terpenes and cannabinoid content. Our Certificates of Analysis are available on our website.

We also use a super critical CO2 method of extraction for all of our CBD Oil Tinctures.  CO2 is a much healthier choice than other potential solvents and is “generally regarded as safe” (GRAS) by the FDA.

If you decide to use CBD products for pain management, be sure to consult with a doctor first to help avoid harmful interactions with your current medications and treatments, along with negative side effects.
